Project Description

ATB Morton worked with Newcastle City Council to design and construct a pavilion at Nobby’s Beach in 1992. We carried out all earthworks for the job, laid the concrete slab and did all the timber work on the structure.

The brief asked that the new pavilion was to co-exist with the structural design of the original Nobby’s Beach Club House, hence the use of the arches as the main design feature of the pavillion. It was also asked that the project was to be environmentally sustainable which led to the structure being constructed from recycled timber sourced from the old Maitland Hospital and the Dockyard Wharfs. Due to this, all timber elements were shaped and planed by hand as the local machinery shops wouldn’t touch the recycled materials for fear of screws and the like damaging their machinery.
